What size should I buy?
Both our 9 and 12cm globes are suitable for planters 6in and larger.
For especially thirsty plants or multiple plants in a single planter we recommend you add several globes spaced around your planter. This will encourage additional root growth and allow your plants to remain watered for longer durations.
Are these good for all plants?
Many common houseplants are tropical (since they do well in a constant climate setting such as indoors) these will all thrive using our sippers.
The plants that you shouldn't use our sippers with are desert plants like cactus and succulents. Any type of plant that likes to completely dry out in between waterings won't do best with the constant water source our sippers provide. It won't get overwatered per se, but the environment created will be more moist than is ideal.
We recommend our sippers for plants with fibrous root systems, not taproots (think carrots). The roots will grow towards the water source.
Where should I place my sipper?
You should stick the terracotta spike in the soil close to the main stem of the plant. In order for your plant to be watered by the globe the roots must reach the water source, so if your globe is closer to the plant the roots don't have as far to go.
The terracotta spike should be far enough from the plant however that the main stem doesn't touch the glass globe, and the spike doesn't break the plant's largest roots.
Why isn't the water level changing in my globe?
If you just installed your sipper we recommend "watering it in" to get it started. Over time the plant's roots will grow towards the terracotta spike and form a network of roots around the spike giving your plant direct access to the water source your sipper provides. But, until the roots have established around the spike it can be helpful to keep lightly watering your plant to encourage root growth.

Can I put fertilizer in my sipper?
If the fertilizer particle size is small enough it will pass through the terracotta pores and be a perfect fertilizer distribution system. If the particle size is too big it could block the pores and prevent water distribution, so be wise in your fertilizer choices. This one we cannot say enough good things about. Exceptional ingredient list, small business with integrity, we use it and can vouch for it's compatibility with our sippers. Truly you won't go wrong with liquidirt.
Does the planter depth matter?
In order for the terracotta spike to be fully submerged in the soil the planter should be at least 7 inches deep. If the planter is less then 7 inches deep the watering spike will still function there will just be a visible stripe of terracotta at the base of the watering globe.
